Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound

Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound is used to assess the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and bladder, and in part the pelvic organs. Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound can help detect kidney stones and gallstones, changes in organ size, inflammation and certain space-occupying lesions, among other things. The examination may form part of the investigation of abdominal pain, bloating or abnormal laboratory results. Bowel gas can limit visibility, and a normal ultrasound does not rule out every disease of the stomach or bowel.

Colour Doppler ultrasound of the abdominal and pelvic arteries

Colour Doppler ultrasound provides information on the diameter and walls of the major abdominal and pelvic arteries and the blood flow within them. Colour Doppler ultrasound can also be used to investigate suspected narrowing of the arteries, vessel wall abnormalities or an abnormal widening (aneurysm). During colour Doppler ultrasound, the colour display helps assess the direction and characteristics of blood flow. The results are evaluated by a specialist radiologist.

Neck vessels: carotid colour Doppler ultrasound

Colour Doppler ultrasound of the neck arteries can help detect plaques and narrowing in the vessel walls and assess blood flow. Your doctor decides whether the examination is needed based on your symptoms, known conditions, cardiovascular risk factors and previous results.

The results can also help plan further care in internal medicine, cardiology, neurology or vascular surgery.

Colour Doppler ultrasound of the limb veins

Colour Doppler ultrasound of the limb veins may be indicated for limb swelling, venous circulation problems or suspected thrombosis. It can help assess whether the veins are open and how well blood flows back through them. Sudden, one-sided, painful leg swelling requires urgent medical assessment; in this case, do not wait for a booked appointment. If it is accompanied by shortness of breath or chest pain, seek emergency care immediately.

Ultrasound of the thyroid, salivary glands and neck lymph nodes

Thyroid ultrasound can assess the size and structure of the thyroid and the presence of any nodules. The thyroid examination is simple, generally painless and requires no special preparation. Where necessary, the salivary glands and lymph nodes can also be examined during the same appointment. Ultrasound may also be indicated for a lump or swelling in the neck, or to follow up a previously detected abnormality.

It is important to note that ultrasound mainly provides information on structural changes in the thyroid. Blood tests are needed to assess thyroid function and hormone production; our endocrinology specialist can help plan any treatment.

Breast ultrasound

Breast ultrasound is used to examine both breasts and the armpit areas. In the case of a palpable lump, a localised complaint or an abnormality found on another imaging test, it can help distinguish, for example, fluid-filled cysts from solid lesions. If a suspicious abnormality is found, further imaging or a biopsy may be needed.

Breast ultrasound does not replace mammography screening where indicated, as certain abnormalities, such as some microcalcifications, are less easily assessed with ultrasound. Joint and muscle ultrasound

Joint and musculoskeletal ultrasound is suitable for examining tendons, muscles, certain ligaments, bursae and the soft tissues around the joints. In cases of pain, swelling, injury or suspected inflammation, it can help detect fluid collections and certain tissue abnormalities. One advantage of ultrasound is that the structures concerned can be examined dynamically, in motion, if needed.

Soft tissue ultrasound can also be used to examine lumps under the skin, abnormalities of fatty and connective tissue, and the lymph nodes. Depending on the findings, an orthopaedic or rheumatology consultation may be recommended.

Testicular and epididymal ultrasound

Ultrasound can assess the structure of both testicles and epididymides, and colour Doppler imaging can assess the blood supply to the area. The examination can help clarify swelling, a palpable lump, inflammation or other scrotal abnormalities. Sudden, severe testicular pain requires immediate medical attention, as it may be caused by a condition requiring urgent intervention.

Infant and paediatric ultrasound

For infants, age-appropriate ultrasound examinations are available, including the abdominal and pelvic organs and, through the still-open fontanelle, the skull. In childhood, ultrasound can be part of the investigation of many complaints, and as it involves no radiation, it is widely used in this age group.
