When should you see a pulmonologist?
Pulmonology, also known as respiratory medicine, deals with the diagnosis, treatment and long-term care of diseases of the airways, lungs and pleura. This includes asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory infections, as well as investigating the causes of persistent cough and breathlessness. Shortness of breath and cough can also be caused by conditions of other organs, so where necessary we recommend involving other specialties, such as cardiology.

It is worth seeing a pulmonology specialist if you experience any of the following:

- persistent or recurring respiratory symptoms;
- a persistent cough or declining exercise tolerance in smokers;
- an abnormality found on a chest X-ray, chest CT or lung function test.

What happens during a pulmonology consultation?
The pulmonology examination begins with a detailed review of your medical history. The specialist learns about the nature, onset and triggers of your symptoms, and reviews previous illnesses, test results and regular medications. Particular attention is paid to smoking history, allergic symptoms, respiratory diseases in the family, and occupational and environmental exposures.
This is followed by a physical examination, which includes observing the chest and breathing and listening to the lungs.
Further tests may be needed to reach an accurate diagnosis, such as blood tests, a chest X-ray, a chest CT or exercise lung function testing. The specialist will advise you on whether these are needed and how they are arranged. Based on the results, a personalised treatment plan is drawn up, which may include medication, lifestyle advice and regular follow-up.
Lung function testing
Lung function testing can be performed at rest or as an exercise test. At rest, the specialist uses a respiratory diagnostic device to measure the volume and flow rate of the air you breathe in and out. The results show the current ability of the lungs to take in and expel air, their oxygen uptake capacity, any narrowing of the airways and the condition of the respiratory muscles. Spiroergometry: cardiopulmonary exercise testing
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing allows the respiratory and circulatory systems to be examined together under exertion. A single test provides information on your physical performance, how the heart and lungs work under load, and the body’s oxygen transport capacity. As it examines function, it can reveal functional abnormalities that are not visible on imaging. It can help with the early detection of lung disease, and is also useful for designing training programmes for athletes and for objectively assessing the fitness of people taking up sport.
It is particularly recommended in the following cases:
- to clarify the cause of breathlessness;
- if your exercise tolerance declines when walking or during physical activity;
- to support the treatment of lung disease and the design of a training plan;
- to investigate the cause of breathlessness after a coronavirus infection, before returning to sport;
- for an accurate assessment of fitness in healthy individuals;
- before major surgery;
- to estimate risk in heart failure;

The test is non-invasive, takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes, and is performed on an exercise bike or treadmill under ECG monitoring.
Chest X-ray
As part of a pulmonology assessment, our specialist may recommend a chest X-ray, which is available at our clinic. The test is painless and involves a low radiation dose. Frequently asked questions about pulmonology examinations
What should I expect during the examination?
If cardiopulmonary exercise testing (spiroergometry) is also indicated, we monitor breathing and circulation during physical exertion. The exercise may cause fatigue and breathlessness; the test is carried out under specialist supervision and adapted to your condition.
How long does a pulmonology consultation take?
A pulmonology consultation takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the case. Diagnostic tests performed separately may take additional time. You can find the duration on the online booking page or ask our staff.
How should I prepare for the examination?
Please bring your identity documents, proof of address card, TAJ (Hungarian social security) card, previous test results and a list of your medications with the active ingredients and doses. Make a note of when your symptoms started and in which situations they occur. You may be accompanied if needed. The specialist consultation and diagnostic tests require no special preparation on your part.

Chest X-rays and lung function tests are available alongside a pulmonology consultation or follow-up, so that the results are evaluated by a specialist. Details can be found in the pulmonology price list.
Can I book an appointment if I already have asthma or COPD?
Yes. We also provide ongoing care for known respiratory conditions. At the follow-up consultation we review your symptoms, results and the effect of treatment, and the specialist then discusses the next steps with you.
