A gynaecological assessment is recommended if you experience any of the following:
- irregular, missed, unusually heavy or painful periods;
- bleeding between periods, after intercourse or after the menopause;
- recurrent lower abdominal or pelvic pain, painful intercourse;
- changes in vaginal discharge, an unpleasant odour, itching or burning;
- vaginal dryness, hot flushes, sleep disturbances or mood swings associated with the menopause;

- a lump, sore or other unusual change in the breast or genital area (useful reading: Breast self-examination: 5 minutes a month);
- any unusual or worrying gynaecological symptom.

Menstrual problems and bleeding disorders
We pay particular attention to investigating menstrual problems and bleeding disorders. From adolescence onwards, it is important that young girls also understand how their bodies work and receive timely answers to their questions.
PCOS and endometriosis
Particular attention is given to complex conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, which often cause pain, cycle irregularities or fertility problems. These require longer-term, personalised assessment and care.
Contraception and family planning

Fertility investigations
In fertility investigations we use hormonal, ultrasound and laboratory tests to look for the causes of any abnormalities, and we support women who are planning a pregnancy. Fallopian tube patency testing is also available if needed.
Antenatal care
Confirming and monitoring pregnancy is a fundamental part of gynaecology. During pregnancy, regular ultrasound scans, vaginal microbiology swabs when needed, and CTG monitoring help track the baby’s development and the mother’s wellbeing. Prenatal genetic tests from a blood sample are available at our clinic. After the birth, follow-up examinations help ensure that the mother recovers properly and that any further steps are identified in good time.
Cancer screening and HPV
Gynaecological cancer screening, which consists of a bimanual examination, cervical cytology, a pelvic ultrasound and a breast examination, is an important preventive tool that can help detect changes early, while they are still symptom-free. Certain strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) can pose a long-term risk to cervical health, which is why HPV screening and targeted treatment of infections are important.
Benign conditions: polyps and fibroids
We manage benign conditions such as endometrial polyps and fibroids, which can cause bleeding disorders or pain and sometimes require surgery.
Menopause and the menopausal transition
During the menopausal transition and perimenopause, hormone-related symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep disturbances, mood swings or bleeding irregularities are common, and specialist support can greatly improve quality of life. Our menopause clinic is supported by the Hungarian Menopause Society. In the postmenopausal period, detecting and treating osteoporosis is also part of our role, as early diagnosis can help prevent fractures. What happens during a specialist gynaecological examination?
The examination begins with a review of your symptoms, menstrual cycle, previous illnesses and results, and current medicines. This is followed by a gynaecological examination tailored to your age and history, which may include a speculum examination, a bimanual examination of the internal reproductive organs and an ultrasound scan, as needed.
Where indicated, we take samples from the cervix or vaginal discharge for cytology, HPV or microbiology testing, or recommend further laboratory or imaging tests. We explain each step of the examination in advance. Based on the results, we discuss treatment options and the timing of any follow-up with you.
Gynaecological ultrasound
Where needed, the gynaecological examination is complemented by an ultrasound scan, usually performed transvaginally. The specialist adapts the method to your age, history and current symptoms, and assesses the findings together with your symptoms, the physical examination and your other results.
Cervical screening and laboratory tests
Cervical screening is used to detect precancerous changes and cervical cancer at an early stage. The tests required and how often they are needed are determined by your age, history and previous results. Where indicated, we take samples for cytology, HPV or microbiology testing; laboratory results are available later.
HPV vaccination is also available at our clinic. Vaccination is an important preventive measure, but it does not replace cervical screening. CTG monitoring
This non-invasive test assesses the baby’s wellbeing and oxygen supply in the womb and monitors uterine activity. Two sensors are placed on the mother’s abdomen and held in place with belts: one uses ultrasound (the Doppler principle) to detect the baby’s heartbeat, and the other detects and records contractions. The test usually takes 20 to 30 minutes and needs to be repeated if the baby is in a sleep phase.

Frequently asked questions about the gynaecological examination
What should I expect during the examination?
The examination and sampling may cause a feeling of pressure or some discomfort; sensitivity varies from person to person. If you feel pain, please tell the examining doctor straight away. Please also let us know if this is your first gynaecological examination, or if you feel anxious because of a previous bad experience: this helps us adapt the examination to your needs.
How long does a specialist gynaecological examination take?
A specialist gynaecological examination usually takes 20 minutes. For more complex symptoms or a separate procedure, the examination may take longer; our staff will let you know. Laboratory results from any samples taken are available later.
How should I prepare for the examination?
Please bring your identity documents, your TAJ (Hungarian social security) card, previous gynaecological and laboratory results, and a list of your medicines. Make a note of the first day of your last period and when your symptoms started. Please tell us if you might be pregnant, are using a vaginal preparation or are bleeding. When booking, ask about how to prepare for any sampling or ultrasound scan.
Can I attend the examination during my period?
For routine screening without symptoms, especially cervical cytology, a time when you are not bleeding is usually best. If you expect your period on the day of your appointment, please contact our staff, bearing in mind our cancellation policy. However, if you have unusual, prolonged or heavy bleeding, the bleeding itself may be the reason for the examination, so do not automatically postpone your consultation.
