When should you see an orthopaedic specialist?
Orthopaedics deals with disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Problems with joints, bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments can cause pain, difficulty bearing load or restricted movement. It is worth having persistent or recurrent complaints investigated, especially if they already interfere with sleep, work or your usual activities. Orthopaedics covers the diagnosis and treatment of both congenital and acquired musculoskeletal conditions. These include joint and tendon disorders as well as certain developmental and postural problems, such as scoliosis, flat feet, bunions or hammer toes, and musculoskeletal complaints resulting from sport or overuse.

An orthopaedic examination is recommended, among other things:
- for shoulder, knee, hip or ankle pain, or joint stiffness;
- for difficulty raising the arm or shoulder pain at night;
- for recurrent neck, back or lower back pain;
- for limping, difficulty walking or postural problems;
- for flat feet, bunions, hammer toes or pain when bearing weight on the foot;
- for tendon and soft tissue complaints related to overuse;
- for pain, instability or restricted movement persisting after an injury;
- for recurrent strains, sprains or tendinitis;
- for tennis or golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendon problems, heel pain or plantar fascia overload;
- for a shoulder or knee injury sustained during sport, or a suspected meniscus or ligament injury.
In joint wear, also known as osteoarthritis, the joint cartilage is damaged and other parts of the joint may also change. Common symptoms include pain that worsens with load and stiffness; it may also be accompanied by swelling or crackling during movement. The severity of symptoms varies from person to person. Treatment aims to relieve symptoms and preserve mobility.
Shoulder pain can have several causes. In frozen shoulder, the joint capsule thickens and tightens, so shoulder movement can become painfully restricted. Symptoms may also occur at night, and recovery can be prolonged. To choose the right treatment, it is important to establish what is causing the restricted movement. Shoulder complaints may also be caused by rotator cuff tendon damage, overuse, injury, bursitis or calcification around the tendons. Where needed, the physical examination can be complemented by a musculoskeletal ultrasound available on site.

What happens during a specialist orthopaedic examination?
During the consultation, our specialist will ask about when the pain started, where it is and what it is like, which movements trigger it, and about any previous injuries, illnesses and operations. They will review any available results and your current medicines.
The physical examination may include observing your gait and posture, feeling the affected area, and checking the range of motion and function of the joint. Some movements may cause discomfort; please let the doctor know. Where necessary, our specialist will use an ultrasound scan to establish the nature of the problem, and may also request further imaging (X-ray).
During the examination we also assess the stability, load tolerance and function of the joint concerned, and for shoulder complaints, targeted shoulder tests help to pinpoint the problem more precisely.
At the end of the examination we discuss the treatment options, which may include injection, medication or infusion therapy; where indicated, we recommend a surgical solution.
Orthopaedic examinations and treatments
Specialist shoulder orthopaedic care
At Tagore Medical Center, Dr. Prédl András FRCS, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and shoulder specialist, diagnoses and treats shoulder conditions and injuries. The aim is to determine precisely which joint, tendon or soft tissue change is behind the complaint and whether it can be treated without surgery.
Where needed, the assessment of shoulder complaints is complemented by ultrasound diagnostics. On site, we offer ultrasound-guided injection treatments, outpatient hydrodilatation for frozen shoulder, and targeted treatment of certain tendon problems involving calcification. If surgery becomes necessary, our specialist will help arrange the appropriate onward care pathway.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound and X-ray
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a diagnostic option available at the clinic, performed with a professional ultrasound machine. The specialist decides whether this examination is sufficient to clarify your complaint or whether further imaging is needed. Our centre can also provide X-rays of the joints and bones, and where necessary we recommend an MRI scan. Musculoskeletal ultrasound can be particularly suitable for examining tendons, muscles, bursae and certain superficial joint structures. Its advantage is that the affected area can be observed while moving, and if needed it can also help guide injections precisely.
Injection treatment of joints and soft tissues
Ultrasound-guided steroid, hyaluronic acid and combined injection treatments are available at the clinic. During the procedure, our specialist continuously monitors the affected area with an ultrasound machine, which helps to target the injection precisely.
Steroids can help reduce inflammation and pain, although the effect may be temporary. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of joint fluid that helps the joint surfaces move smoothly; injected, it may relieve osteoarthritic joint pain in some patients. Combined preparations contain an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid in addition to hyaluronic acid, so they aim to reduce both pain and inflammation. Before treatment, discuss the expected benefits, possible side effects and the conditions for repeat treatment with your doctor. For shoulder complaints, ultrasound guidance makes it possible to deliver the injection to the affected joint or soft tissue area. Such treatment may be considered for certain types of shoulder joint inflammation, bursa or tendon problems, and calcific rotator cuff complaints, among others.
For frozen shoulder, ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation may be used following specialist assessment. During the treatment, fluid is injected to help stretch the tight joint capsule; the aim is to reduce pain and improve the shoulder’s range of motion.
Pain-relieving infusion treatments
The aim of treatment is to relieve pain, make everyday movement easier and, where needed, support the start of physiotherapy. The doctor selects the medicines used taking into account your symptoms, other medical conditions and the medicines you take regularly.
The infusion is given through a cannula placed in a vein, under the supervision of healthcare professionals. Our centre offers single-session treatment as well as courses of three and five sessions; the number and frequency of sessions depend on the doctor’s recommendation and your response to treatment.
PRP treatment
PRP is platelet-rich plasma prepared from your own blood. After the blood is drawn and centrifuged, the preparation is injected into the area to be treated. Platelets contain growth factors that are involved in tissue healing processes.
Improvement can be achieved in certain chronic tendon problems and mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis, but the evidence is not equally strong for every condition. PRP does not guarantee recovery, and it cannot be promised to rebuild worn cartilage. Following specialist assessment, PRP treatment may also be considered for certain tendon and soft tissue complaints, such as tennis or golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendon problems or plantar fascia overload. In joints, it is mainly considered for certain complaints caused by wear. The outcome may also depend on the type and severity of the condition and the preparation used. A temporary increase in pain may occur; you will be informed in advance about the expected effect, risks and aftercare.

When is urgent care needed?
A limb deformity following a recent injury, a severe injury with an open wound, or being unable to bear weight on the limb requires trauma or emergency assessment. A suddenly painful, hot, swollen joint, especially with fever or feeling unwell, may be a sign of infection and needs urgent assessment.
If lower back pain is accompanied by new problems passing urine or opening your bowels, numbness around the genitals or back passage, or weakness in both legs, seek emergency help immediately. With these symptoms, do not wait for a scheduled private appointment; if your condition is severe, call 112.
Frequently asked questions about the orthopaedic examination
How long does the specialist consultation take?
The examination takes around 20 minutes on average; the duration also depends on the complexity of your symptoms and the treatment required. When you book, our team will let you know how long your chosen service is expected to take. Infusion therapy may require a separate appointment.
How should I prepare for the examination?
Please bring your identity documents, your Hungarian social security (TAJ) card if you have one, previous test results and discharge summaries, and a list of your medications. If available, please also make your previous X-ray, MRI or CT images accessible. It is worth noting which movements make your symptoms worse or better.
How much does a private orthopaedic appointment cost?
For private orthopaedic prices, please see our current price list. When booking, check what the consultation fee includes and which extra costs may apply for ultrasound, X-ray or the injectable product. In addition to the orthopaedic specialist examination, separate fees may apply to imaging, ultrasound-guided injections, PRP treatment and pain-relief infusions, among others. Current fees can always be found in our central price list.
Which tests and treatments are available on site?
Our clinic offers specialist examinations, musculoskeletal ultrasound, X-ray, and ultrasound-guided injection and PRP treatments. If further imaging or surgery is needed, we will help organise the next steps of your care.
Does every case of joint wear require surgery?
No. Exercise therapy, adjusting your activity levels and, where needed, medication can help in many cases. Surgery may be considered if symptoms significantly limit your daily life and other treatments have not brought adequate improvement.
What should I look out for after an injection?
You will receive personalised advice on activity, sport and follow-up. If the treated area becomes increasingly painful, hot or swollen, especially with a fever, seek medical help as soon as possible.
