It is worth seeking help even if you have no known mental health condition but are struggling to cope with a situation, or would like to understand your own reactions better. You may wish to see a clinical psychologist, among other things:
- in cases of ongoing stress, overload, exhaustion or signs of burnout;
- when experiencing anxiety, fears, panic-like episodes or recurring worries;
- in cases of low mood, loss of enjoyment, loss of motivation or significant changes in mood;
- with sleep difficulties or problems managing emotions or anger;
- to work through grief, loss, a break-up or another stressful life situation;
- in cases of conflict at work, in the family or in a relationship, or low self-confidence;
- in cases of emotional strain related to physical illness, adjusting to a chronic condition or stress-related physical symptoms;

Clinical psychologist Profile
What happens during a clinical psychology consultation?
The aim of the first session is to understand what difficulty or life situation has brought you here and what kind of help you are looking for. The psychologist will ask about when your symptoms began, how they affect your daily life, what you have tried so far and any previous psychological or psychiatric treatment. Physical illnesses and medicines you take are also important information.

The assessment is based on conversation, which may be supplemented by psychological questionnaires or tests where necessary. These can help to understand your difficulties more precisely and to plan further care. The psychologist will discuss the nature of any tests and the meaning of the results with you.
Based on the difficulties identified, you will agree together on the goals of the consultation and the next steps. The work may include stress management, conflict management, problem solving and developing communication and social skills. The psychologist adapts the methods to your individual needs and to their own professional competence.
The frequency of further sessions and the expected scope of the process are agreed together. In some cases it may be necessary to involve a psychiatrist or to recommend another form of care; the psychologist will explain the reasons and the options. How can a clinical psychologist help?
Stress management and burnout prevention
Prolonged strain can make it harder to rest, regulate emotions and cope with everyday tasks. During the consultation we map out the sources of stress, the habits that sustain overload and the resources available to you. The aim is to broaden your coping options, recognise your personal limits and make changes that support recovery. Our psychologist’s toolkit includes autogenic training and progressive muscle relaxation; whether to use them is decided on the basis of your individual condition.
Anxiety and mood problems
Recurring worries, fears, panic-like episodes or persistent low mood can narrow everyday life. The psychologist helps to explore which situations the symptoms are linked to and which patterns of thought, emotion or behaviour may be keeping them going. Based on the assessment, they will recommend appropriate psychological support or, if necessary, a psychiatric assessment. The form of treatment depends on the nature and severity of the symptoms.
The emotional burden of physical illness and psychosomatic symptoms
Being diagnosed with an illness, undergoing treatment or making lasting lifestyle changes can be a significant emotional burden. Psychological support can help you cope with the uncertainty that comes with illness, adjust and reorganise your daily life. A particular focus of Dr. Nagy Alexandra’s work is supporting people living with heart disease and helping patients live with chronic illness.
Physical symptoms and emotional state can influence each other. Stress-related symptoms are real symptoms too; psychological support for them complements appropriate medical investigation and treatment.
Loss, life changes and relationship difficulties
In times of grief, a break-up, family change or conflict at work, it can become difficult to process emotions and find the next steps. The consultation offers space to talk through distressing experiences, recognise your own needs and map out the support available to you. Working together can also help develop communication, conflict management and problem-solving skills. Relationship difficulties can also be addressed in individual consultations; the appropriate form of care is agreed during the first sessions.
Frequently asked questions about clinical psychology
How should I prepare for the first consultation?
Think about why you are seeking help, how long the difficulty has been going on and what change you would like to achieve. If you have previous psychological, psychiatric or related medical records, please have them ready together with a list of the medicines you take. You do not need to be able to put every problem into words in advance: the conversation will help with that.
What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A clinical psychologist has a healthcare specialist qualification built on a degree in psychology, and carries out assessment and treatment using psychological methods. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can also prescribe medication. A clinical psychologist does not prescribe medicines; where necessary, the two professionals work together. The title of psychotherapist indicates a further specialist qualification.
How long does a consultation last?
Our team will tell you the exact length of the first and subsequent sessions when you book. If a detailed psychodiagnostic assessment is needed, its time requirements and scope are agreed separately with the psychologist.
How many sessions might I need?
This depends on the nature of the problem, how long it has existed and the goals agreed together. A shorter consultation process may help with a current decision, while more complex difficulties may call for longer support or another form of treatment. Progress and next steps are reviewed regularly.
How much does a consultation cost?
Current fees can be found in our clinical psychology price list. Please ask our team in advance about the cost of the consultation and of any separate psychodiagnostic assessment.
Do I need a referral, and do you see children?
You can book an appointment directly, without a referral. Our adult clinical and mental health psychologist sees patients aged 18 and over. If your doctor has recommended the consultation, please also bring the relevant documentation.
