When should you see a urologist?

Our urology specialists treat diseases of the kidneys, urinary tract and male genital organs. The aim of a urological assessment is to clarify the cause of your symptoms and determine the right treatment. Our clinic also provides support in monitoring known conditions and carrying out regular screening.

A urological examination is recommended, among other things, for:
- stinging or burning, painful urination;
- frequent, urgent need to urinate or regularly passing urine at night;
- difficulty starting to urinate, a weak or interrupted stream;
- dribbling, difficulty holding urine or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying;
- blood in the urine or recurrent urinary tract infections;
- pain in the lower back, lower abdomen or perineum;
- testicular pain, testicular swelling, a palpable lump or changes to the penis;
- erectile difficulties, painful ejaculation or other sexual complaints.
You can also request a consultation about prostate screening without any symptoms, particularly if there is a family history. For known kidney stones, prostate enlargement or after previous treatment, follow-up examinations recommended by the specialist help monitor your condition.
What happens during a urology consultation?

The examination begins with a detailed consultation: our specialist reviews your symptoms, urinary habits, previous illnesses, medications and test results. This is followed by a physical examination tailored to your symptoms, which for men may include a digital rectal examination of the prostate.
Where needed, the assessment is supplemented by a detailed urological ultrasound, TRUS, urinalysis, urine culture or a blood test, such as a PSA test.
Urological ultrasound
Urological ultrasound is a radiation-free imaging method that helps assess the kidneys and bladder, and in men the prostate, testicles and epididymides. At Tagore Medical Center, examinations are performed with a Philips Affiniti 70 ultrasound system. For women, the investigation of pelvic and urinary complaints is supplemented by a gynaecology consultation where necessary.
Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)
During transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), the probe is inserted through the rectum so that the prostate can be examined at close range. This method allows the volume and structure of the prostate to be assessed well, so it often gives a more accurate picture than ultrasound through the abdominal wall.
The examination takes a few minutes and is generally not painful, although it can be uncomfortable. If you feel any pain, please tell the examining doctor immediately.
Ultrasound alone is not sufficient to confirm or rule out cancer. The necessary tests are always tailored to your symptoms and history.
Laboratory tests
Urinalysis, urine culture and blood sampling can be carried out on site. Culture results and some laboratory parameters take longer; we will let you know when your results are issued.
